Every farmer knows the importance of good colostrum management after calving. However, despite a farmer’s dedication to colostrum management, calf morbidity and mortality still represents a significant cost both in terms of veterinary costs associated with treating sick animals and losses associated with poor performance and mortality. 

Anupro has developed a highly innovative calf rearing model that focuses on these critical developmental time points; “Windows of Impact”, during early life which are crucial to the future success of your animal. This programme embraces a new era of ruminant nutrition, whereby bespoke rations are formulated to establish synergy between balanced nutritional inputs, the immune system and the animal’s internal environment to deliver 3 main outcomes: 

1. Create a positive energy balance whereby metabolic programming delivers maximum growth and mammary development at an early age
2. Maintenance of a high level of immune competence to maximise the animal’s ability to fight disease and consequently reduce antibiotic usage
3. Reduce pathogen load within the gut environment to ensure maximum absorption of nutrients at all times 
   
   

To accomplish these outcomes we have developed a new approach to calf rearing; one that is focused on gut health and early-life rumen development. Contrary to conventional rearing systems, our approach is based on a low milk replacer intake and immediate concentrate consumption from birth, driven by our innovative feeding programme. The critical and interlinked aims of this programme are: avoiding negative energy balance, optimising gut health and fast-tracking rumen development. 

The programme de-risks calf rearing by balancing energy contribution and eliminating future negative energy balance caused by poor rumen function. This process optimises immune competence, metabolic programming and gut health, all of which dramatically reduce the occurrence of disease. These outcomes are enhanced when additional complementary managerial approaches on farm are implemented such as providing dry clean beds, adequate space allowance and optimising ventilation.
