In spring, the cow should consume a high amount of quality grass; however, poor weather conditions and low grass availability can result in inconsistent and insufficient energy intake. Suboptimal energy intake can result in low milk protein levels, poor milk yields, suboptimal fertility, immune suppression and increased susceptibility to metabolic diseases. The Anupro ProGrass programme focuses on a successful peri-parturient transition by optimising the recovery from calving and promoting a rapid increase in energy intake, which is critical in establishing high performance in early lactation, lactational persistency and optimal fertility.
Pre-calving management is critical for a successful transition, and has a huge influence on post-calving recovery and the significant risk of milk fever. It is estimated that the cost of subclinical milk fever is four times greater than that of clinical cases. Subclinical milk fever is an underlying issue on most herds resulting in cows being lethargic, having suboptimal energy intake, and being more susceptible to additional metabolic disorders and infections. Numerous studies have confirmed that lowering the dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) pre-calving significantly reduces the rate of clinical and subclinical milk fever. The Anupro ProGrass programme addresses this issue in numerous ways starting with our anionic salt based pre-calver; EconDryCow DCAD, which has multiple sources of bioavailable magnesium; critical in controlling blood calcium levels. Maxvital-D offers fast-track recovery from calving promoting increased water and feed intakes; optimizing transition and improving milk production. Maxvital-D offered immediately post-calving offers oral supplementation of calcium to prevent a decrease in blood calcium concentration. Furthermore, Maxvital-D incorporates amino acids that act as transporters of sugars, improving the availability of energy supply which is important in aiding metabolism. Its composition includes a balanced supply of mineral salts that make it a leading rehydrating agent to aid speedy recovery and adaptation to lactation.
Post-calving, the key challenge in Spring calving herds is achieving high energy intakes as quickly as possible to optimise early lactation. In periods of poor grass supply due to low availability or simply poor weather conditions, dry matter intakes are supressed causing excessive body reserve mobilisation. Excessive body reserve mobilisation causes severe negative energy balance which can have long-term detrimental effects on production; especially milk protein levels, health and fertility. Anupro have addressed this issue in great detail and aim to revolutionise transition cow management. Econ FreshCalver is specifically designed to address the needs of the cow immediately post-calving by optimising energy intakes and delivering high levels of rumen protection during microbial adaptation, which in turn relieves metabolic pressure and optimises production potential. Econ FreshCalver targets:
Managing the transition period correctly will reduce sub-clinical disease and optimise production potential, health and fertility. Maxvital-D and Econ Freshcalver deliver a smooth transition, as well as long-term production, health and fertility benefits. The ProGrass programme is particularly beneficial in providing heifers with an optimal start to lactation and enhancing lactational persistency, particularly if they have progressed through our ProHeifer programme.
After this crucial transition period, it is important to ensure lactational performance is maintained and reproductive function remains optimal. EconCow Excel has been formulated to meet the requirements of the high performing dairy cow, optimising production and fertility. It is designed to complement grazing systems and deliver optimal rumen function.
