In spring, the cow should consume a high amount of quality grass; however, poor weather conditions and low grass availability can result in inconsistent and insufficient energy intake. Suboptimal energy intake can result in low milk protein levels, poor milk yields, suboptimal fertility, immune suppression and increased susceptibility to metabolic diseases. The Anupro ProGrass programme focuses on a successful peri-parturient transition by optimising the recovery from calving and promoting a rapid increase in energy intake, which is critical in establishing high performance in early lactation, lactational persistency and optimal fertility.
Pre-calving management is critical for a successful transition, and has a huge influence on post-calving recovery and the significant risk of milk fever. It is estimated that the cost of subclinical milk fever is four times greater than that of clinical cases. Subclinical milk fever is an underlying issue on most herds resulting in cows being lethargic, having suboptimal energy intake, and being more susceptible to additional metabolic disorders and infections. Numerous studies have confirmed that lowering the dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) pre-calving significantly reduces the rate of clinical and subclinical milk fever.
