It has been well documented that following parturition the high genetic merit cow experiences both a rapid acceleration of, and high peak in, milk yield. This increase in energy output however is generally not emulated by an equivalent increase in energy intake with the shortfall being compensated by the rapid mobilisation of body reserves. This phenomenon commonly generates nutritionally related metabolic imbalances, producing disorders such as ketosis, and normally places the cow in severe negative energy balance. It is the development of the latter, which is often subclinical, that is now recognised as a severe suppressant on the cow’s immune system, production potential and reproductive capacity.
The OptiLac Programme offers peace of mind that your herd will be safeguarded from disease and perform to genetic potential. This programme focuses on smooth transition and appropriate nutrition to minimise severe negative energy balance and subsequent disease. Our focus on preparing the cow pre-calving, and recovery post-calving, delivers a simultaneous increase in milk yield and energy intake to alleviate negative energy balance and metabolic stress. Anupro take a precise approach to optimising cell and system recovery, cell metabolism, liver function and rumen transition to deliver optimal production, fertility and longevity. The OptiLac programme delivers a rapid acceleration in energy matter intake and enhanced cell metabolism allowing the cow to quickly address all metabolic needs effectively. This approach eliminates metabolic imbalances caused by nutritional stress, such as ketosis, fatty liver syndrome and severe negative energy balance, all of which have a dramatic impact on the productive and reproductive capacity of the cow.
The OptiLac Programme, as well as addressing the basic needs of the cow, focuses on:
The importance of the dry period is often overlooked and cows, especially high-yielding cows, need time to recover from lactation in terms of udder regeneration and udder health. The dry period is also vitally important in preparing the cow for calving and entry into lactation. One of the most important issues the OptiLac Programme addresses is the periparturient dip in energy intake. Our dry cow nutrition focuses on maintaining appetite and rumen function during this period. Whilst a dip in intake can advantageous from a liver conditioning perspective, this can be achieved without a severe drop in energy intake. Moving into transition, the OptiLac Programme is designed to reduce the rate of clinical, but more importantly, subclinical metabolic disease. At calving, subclinical milk fever has a major impact on transition causing suboptimal performance, and it is one of the biggest drains on profitability and herd longevity. Subtle, but critically important signs of subclinical disease include lethargy and poor intakes. Whilst this can pass with time, often it leads to more sinister outcomes such as metabolic disorders and infections which can severely impact production potential. Coupled with Econ DryCow DCAD, Maxvital-D will reduce the risk of clinical and subclinical issues as it provides an immediate supply of highly available calcium. It also encourages water consumption post-calving to replace fluids lost and supplies amino acids that act as transporters of sugars to speed up metabolism, improving the availability of energy. Furthermore, it includes a balanced supply of electrolytes, vitamins and mineral salts that make it a leading rehydrating agent to aid speedy recovery and performance.
The focus on transition continues into the post-calving period and it is recommended that if not already existing, a fresh calved group be established, allowing particular focus during this critical time. The OptiLac programme provides high levels of rumen protection at a time when dry matter intake and volatile fatty acid production are increasing quickly. However, it is the additional focus areas of this programme that make it so effective. As well as continuing to promote energy intake, reduce metabolic pressure and optimise production, Econ FreshCalver targets:
After the four week fresh-calver period cows will be fully prepared to enter the main high-yielding group. EconCow Excel provides all the essential requirements for animal and rumen health, allowing the cow to optimise production and fertility. It also addresses key immune requirements and binds mycotoxins ensuring an effective immune response in controlling somatic cell count and other challenges. Furthermore, the EconCow Excel targets cell health which is particularly important in maintaining mammary gland secretory capacity in optimising lactational persistency. EconCow Excel also maintains the post-fresh increase in dry matter intake to ensure a positive productive and reproductive response.
The OptiLac Programme is particularly beneficial for heifers, providing the needed protection to deliver a strong start to lactation, especially if they have come through our ProHeifer programme.
